Self-sovereign identity or SSI in short, is a digital framework where an entity (Individual or Corporation) owns its identity (Verifiable Credential and Decentralized ID - DID) and controls the way it’s shared in a decentralized environment.

SSI is its closest equivalent of individual's identification in the digital world. In the physical world, you can always lose your card or it can get stolen from your wallet. But with SSI, the underlying cryptography makes it difficult to access your Personal Identifiable Information (PII) by any unauthorized entity.

ZCert is a verifiable credentials platform that encrypts, issues and store verifiable credentials or IDs on the blockchain.

In Malaysia and around the world, there’s a great push towards data protection and privacy.

Privacy regulations such as Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are enacted to give individuals complete control over their personal data including with whom and how they are shared.

Two important data protection and privacy principles of PDPA and GDPR are to:
1. Provide users complete control over the transactional aspects of their digital identity including its monetization.
2. Provide free movement of data across the countries to enable commerce.

1. An Issuer and User’s DID/BID and public keys.
2. Cryptographic hashes (a long string of numbers and letters) can be tied to the verifiable credential and stored on the blockchain to confirm proof of existence without revealing personal data. The hashes make the data unidentifiable to a human.

1. A User’s personal data like name, date of birth, address, and credit card details etc.
2. Verifiable Credentials like a passport, citizenship status, employee title, and university degree.
